The government will not let business rivals to take the law in their hands, Principal Secretary for Interior Dr Kibicho Karanja has warned. He said this while receiving the official report from the task force that was formed to investigate the dispute between traditional taxi drivers and Uber online taxi operators that has been spiraling every sunrise.
The chairman of the task force Mr. Wang’ombe Kariuki who is also the Director-General of the Competition Authority of Kenya presented the 60- page report to the PS at Harambee House. In his remarks after officially receiving the report, PS Kibicho said the Government was committed to providing security for all business entities operating in the country.
“There is no room in this country for business rivals to take the law into their own hands,” said PS Kibicho referring to an incident last month where a Uber Taxi was burnt by rival taxi operators with two people getting injured in the skirmish.
The PS further urged regulatory agencies in the transport industry to ensure that there was level playground for all operators.
In his remarks, the chairman of the task force Mr Wang’ombe Kariuki said his team had met with players in taxi business from both sides of the dispute and consulted widely before coming up with its report. The inter-agency task force comprised of representatives from the Competition Authority of Kenya, Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the Nairobi County Government, NTSA and Kenya Investment Authority.
