A fresh book, Her Roots by Lanji Ouko was recently launched at the Burudani Theatre at Brookhouse International School. The book is about winning – looking at the real issues faced by the young Kenyan women in terms of finances, friendships, family, spirituality, investments as well as careers. The author, who also a writer with this magazine, shines the spotlight on worrying trends such as rape, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) as well as gender violence.
In addition to the official launch, Ms Ouko partnered with Couture Africa– a lifestyle magazine for ladies – to congratulate young ladies at a gala awards held at the same venue themed Couture Africa: Her Roots Gala Awards. Her book is to empower young women, and is all of believing in your thing and wringing it.
Lanji Ouko’s dad, High Court Judge William Ouko, Chief Justice Will Mutunga and former Westlands MP Fred Gumo are some of the guests who graced the ceremony.
Lanji is a lawyer, activist, a writer for The Nairobi Business Monthly and now an author. She is just 24, and a big inspiration. “My failure in the past, triggered a whole new line of thought,” she told Couture Africa in a past interview.
“My perspective on so many issues changed. I woke up. All I am after is to be a “better me”. I know my potential but I feel we, as young women need that extra push, and constant reminder of how great we are. As cliché as it sounds; life has been my sole teacher. Her Roots looks at the important areas to tackle while we are still in our 20s in order to live a “happier life” in our 30s. The book serves as a “toolkit” to a better lifestyle. A trial and error handbook,” she says.
