Google has opened applications for the 8th cohort of its Google for Startups Accelerator Africa program that focus on startups leveraging on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).
Applications submission window for the program that will run from June to September 2024 runs from April 29 to May 20, 2024, during which applications will be submitted online at g.co/AcceleratorAfrica.
According to Africa at Google, eligible startups must be based in Africa or building Africa-centric solutions and should be utilizing AI and ML in a transformative way.
Head of Startups Ecosystem, Africa at Google, Folarin Aiyegbusi, said the program aims to address critical challenges and unlock new opportunities across the continent on issues related to artificial intelligence and machine learning.
She said Google for Startups Accelerator Africa is a three-month, equity-free virtual program that provides African startups with mentorship, technical resources, and access to a global network of experts and investors.
Aiyegbusi mentioned that the 8th cohort will have a strong focus on startups leveraging, noting that since the company’s inception in 2018, the program has supported a total of 106 startups from 17 African countries, besides collectively raising over $263 million and creating more than 2,800 direct jobs.
“We’re excited to support the next generation of African AI pioneers through the Google for Startups Accelerator, providing them with the resources and mentorship they need to build successful, impactful businesses,” said Aiyegbusi, adding that AI has the potential to be a transformative force across various sectors.

In a press statement to newsrooms, Aiyegbusi noted that startups are the lifeblood of innovation, drivers of economic growth, creators of jobs, and solvers of some of society’s most pressing challenges.
“In Africa, digital transformation is accelerating rapidly and startups play a vital role in shaping the continent’s future,from fintech and agritech to healthcare and education,” she stated.
The program will include equity-free support of up to $350,000 in Google Cloud credits, mentorship involving personalized guidance from Google AI experts, seasoned entrepreneurs, and industry leaders, technical workshops with in-depth training on Artificial Insemination and machine learning development product strategy, and scaling.
Others include a global network focusing on connections to potential investors, partners, and customers, and a community program involving a supportive network of fellow founders facing similar challenges and opportunities.
