Former Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) boss Michael Waweru who died yesterday, July 6, ensured the country had a strong tax compliance foundation.
Waweru, who served the government agency for nine years, from 2003 until his retirement in 2012, was also the Board Chairman of East Africa Cables, a position he held for seven years.
“We at KRA offer our deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Michael Waweru, former KRA Commissioner General, following his passing. Dr. Waweru’s years of service were marked by significant contributions to sustainable economic progress through enhanced revenue collection – a legacy that will forever be remembered,” KRA’s chairperson Antony Mwaura, said in a statement.
Mr Mwaura said the late Waweru was a pivotal figure who will mostly be remembered for helping shore up Kenya’s tax collection from Sh183 billion in 2002 to over Sh630 billion in 2011.
“Waweru’s nine years of service were marked by significant contributions to sustainable economic progress through enhanced revenue collection – a legacy that will forever be remembered. May he rest in eternal peace,” KRA said.
