Three Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers have been killed and seven others injured following a deadly improvised explosive device (IED) attack in Badaah, along the Kiunga–Sankuri road in Lamu County.
According to Lamu East Deputy County Commissioner George Kubai, the soldiers were returning from Sankuri—where they had been transporting colleagues—when their vehicle hit a hidden explosive device.
The injured personnel were first taken to Kiunga Hospital for treatment before being evacuated to specialised military medical facilities in the region. KDF confirmed the wounded are responding well to treatment.
In response, a major security operation has been launched to track down those responsible. A multi-agency team has heightened patrols and route manning in and out of the area to prevent further attacks.
“Immediately after the incident, multi-agency security teams launched operations in pursuit of the perpetrators of the heinous act and have tightened security to deny the enemy freedom of movement,” said KDF in a statement.
The military further confirmed the deaths of the three soldiers and offered condolences to their families.
“Regrettably, three gallant soldiers succumbed to their injuries. These soldiers paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the citizens of Kenya. The entire KDF fraternity condoles with their families.”
KDF also commended the courage of the personnel involved and the swift response by the joint security forces operating in the region.
