BY MICHAEL BALL According to the government’s power development plans, the next decade will see many new solar PV and wind power plants added to the national grid. This new capacity would support in supplying the country’s growing electricity demand, resulting from the continued economic growth and broadening electrification targeted under Vision 2030. The growth of these renewable technologies is expected to deliver considerable benefits to the power sector in the form of lower greenhouse gas emissions, lower baseload utilization of thermal power plants, and reduced dependency on drought susceptible hydropower. Despite these benefits, the high degree of intermittency of…

BY JACOB OKETCH Recent political happenings in the country indicate that leaders have started to position themselves for the 2022 presidential elections. A new alliance comprising ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Ford Kenya boss Moses Wetangula and KANU supremo Gideon Moi has emerged. It is believed to have the tacit support of state functionaries. This alliance is largely a group of politicians who honed their skills under the tutelage of the late retired President Daniel Arap Moi. Given that President Uhuru Kenyatta too came from this mould – it gives us an understanding of why he may…
BY EDWIN WANJAWA It is official. The third wave is here. The Government has locked down the five counties of Nairobi, Machakos, Kiambu, Kajiado and Nakuru that bear the highest brunt of the disease in order to flatten the curve and not overwhelm our health facilities. In addition, we are called to maintain the basic Covid-19 safety protocols of social distancing, masking up and regularly washing hands with soap. However, all these are stop gap measures. To get us out of the woods, we need herd immunity and our best shot at that is to get a significant part of…

Now is the time to ensure that schools are mindful and deliberate in developing those skills which will be in high demand and necessary for success in a reconstituted future. Looking toward the future, schools which have not yet done so, must start focusing on more than academics, and…
BY DAVID ONJILI On the eve of the game, I had predicted that Egypt’s attack would predominantly come from the right and specifically through Salah’s intelligent play exploiting Eric Ouma’s limited defensive abilities. That Salah would replicate what he does for his club, Liverpool FC, tuck inside the right channel and give room to Mohamed Moursy to advance. This overload down the right would deliver dangerous crosses with Hegazi as the target. Well, 90 seconds into the game and Salah had dispossessed Eric Ouma, squared it to the overlapping Ahmed Hegazy who played a diagonal ball into the penalty area.…
