Bamburi Cement Plc, in agreement with the Mombasa County government, has voluntarily suspended operations on its Mombasa quary site after a one off coal dust incident.

On Wednesday, January 10, the company indicated in a statement that it is suspending “certain activities” while putting in place a cross-functional committee to address the incident, which it attributes to unprecedented winds during coal storage preparation.

The Nairobi Securities-listed company will also implement “additional measures” to ensure control over coal movement from the port to the plant.

“In our commitment to compliance, we are conducting thorough reviews, enhancing community engagement, and maintaining normal operations,” the company said.

The decision came two days after Mombasa County Deputy Governor Francis Thoya under the company of officials from the National Environment Management Authority of Kenya (NEMA) visited the factory’s premises.

“These measures have not in any way affected our general operations… we continue to engage with the County Government of Mombasa’s Public Health, Environment departments, and other stakeholders, to arrive at a sustainable solution,” it said.
