The State Department for Public Works in collaboration with the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), and the UN Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) have launched the strategic Infrastructure Asset Management Enabling Environment (IAM EE) Roadmap Action Plan, that proposes clear actions to enhance the country’s public infrastructure asset management practices.
The roadmap was developed to identify and reinforce consistent, systematic strategies, policies, and actions at these levels, ensuring that infrastructure assets effectively support inclusive, resilient, and sustainable essential public services throughout their lifecycle.
According to Joel Arumonyang, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Public Works, this move marked a significant milestone in Kenya’s journey toward enhancing the management of our public infrastructure.
“The launch of the Infrastructure Asset Management Enabling Environment (IAMEE) Roadmap is not only a key step in improving the sustainability and resilience of our national infrastructure systems but also an important demonstration of our commitment to achieving our sectorial Sustainable Development Goals. This roadmap will guide us in strengthening our policies, strategies and actions to ensure that Kenya’s infrastructure assets continue to provide inclusive and resilient public services throughout their lifecycle. As we move forward, the collaboration and support of all stakeholders will be crucial in realizing this vision. Together, we can build a stronger, more sustainable Kenya for future generations,” he said.
The launch of the roadmap plan was a part of the project dubbed “Enhancing the Resilience, Accessibility, and Sustainability of Infrastructure Assets in Developing Countries in Support of the 2030 Agenda.” This initiative represents the culmination of dedicated efforts to enhance the ability to design and execute improved national policies, regulations, and legislative frameworks for infrastructure asset management across both national and local government levels.
As the event served as a platform to formally introduce the roadmap, it also aimed to foster collaboration and secure stakeholder support for its implementation, while also raising awareness about the critical role of Infrastructure asset management in advancing sustainable development in the country. Through this initiative, stakeholders were encouraged to work together to ensure the long-term success and impact of these efforts.
In accordance with Mr. Daniel Platz, Senior Economic Affairs Officer, UN DESA, this development will strengthen governance, enhance service delivery, and build long-term resilience.
“A strategic, data-driven approach ensures that infrastructure investments serve communities efficiently, sustainably, and inclusively for generations to come. UN DESA is grateful for the dedication and collaboration of participating local and national governments, UNOPS, and UNCDF, for their commitment with effective infrastructure asset management in Kenya,” Mr. Platz said.
