Kenya is set to bring a powerful and unified vision for the future of transport to the forefront at the upcoming Smarter Mobility Africa 2025 summit in Johannesburg.
The event, scheduled for 30th September to 2nd October, will feature a high-level delegation coordinated by GIZ Kenya’s Promotion of E-mobility project, showcasing the nation’s comprehensive approach to building a thriving electric mobility ecosystem.
This delegation represents the very heart of the county’s drive, uniting senior figures from Nairobi City County, the State Department for Transport, the State Department for Energy, Kenya Power & Lighting Company, and the Energy & Petroleum Regulatory Authority.
The country has rapidly emerged as one of Africa’s most dynamic e-mobility hubs, demonstrating remarkable progress in both manufacturing and adoption.
On the ground, local assembly of electric motorcycles from companies like Roam and electric buses from BasiGo is scaling up, actively building new job opportunities, developing skilled workforces, and establishing robust supplier networks.
This tangible growth is being strategically guided by progressive policy, with a series of national frameworks, pilot programs, and regulatory work from bodies like EPRA successfully catalysing real-world deployment and encouraging consumer uptake.
From comprehensive charging-infrastructure studies to Nairobi’s own EV framework, the government offers a compelling model of how public policy and private innovation can move in lockstep.
At the summit, this cross-sectoral delegation will share invaluable experiences and practical lessons, particularly from their work on charging infrastructure and integrating new electrical loads into the national grid. They will showcase their advances in policy, standards, and regulation, providing adaptable blueprints for other markets across the continent.
A key objective will be to explore new opportunities for regional collaboration across East, Southern, and West Africa, while also contributing to essential dialogues on job creation, skills development, and strengthening local manufacturing value chains.
According to Ben Pullen, Group Director for Mobility at VUKA Group, the presence of such a delegation is crucial. He emphasized that the summit serves as a vital meeting place for African cities dedicated to improving the movement of people and goods, where sharing insight and projects is essential for accelerating progress.
Bringing these leaders together creates a powerful platform for global and African solution providers and investors to connect with the people actively shaping real change in the transport sector.
The Kenyan delegation is keen to learn and forge new partnerships. They aim to connect with a diverse range of solution providers in charging, energy management, software, and vehicle production, as well as public sector peers from other African cities, transport authorities, and regulators.
