The Kenya Meteorological department has asked Kenyans to brace for more rains this week until Wednesday even as the heavy rains witnessed on Sunday night wreaked havoc in parts of the capital city Nairobi and in other areas across the country.

The met department, in a statement issued on Monday, March 25, 2024, projected a continuation of the ongoing rains with an advisory to Kenyans to take the necessary measures to avoid any injuries.

KMD Director Kennedy Thiong’o also warned of isolated storms over some parts of the country.

“Rainfall is expected over some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands, and the Coast and North-western,” he said.

“North-eastern Kenya is likely to be generally sunny and dry,” Thiong’o said.

The Met director issued the advisory even as residents of various parts of the country including Nairobi continued to count losses caused by heavy rains that was experienced in major areas of the country.

For almost eight hours, heavy rains pounded the country’s capital city from Sunday night to Monday morning.

The nonstop rains, which also led to flooding in sections of the central business district, Westlands and Eastleigh, was also witnessed across all 17 sub-counties.

Some of the parts of the city which were affected included walkways, roads and drainages and even the Nairobi expressway, leaving little to no room for human movement.

In their advisory, the met department said that the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley are likely to experience rainfall, showers, and thunderstorms during the day.

The region is also likely to witness showers over several places at night, and maximum temperatures of 33 degrees Celsius with minimum temperatures of more 10 degrees Celsius.

The North-western region including Turkana and Samburu counties will experience a maximum of 40 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 15 degrees Celsius with isolated rainfall in parts of the region.

Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi County will experience showers in several places, the meteorological agency said.

KMD projected minimum temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius and a maximum temperature of 30 degrees Celsius.
