45 per cent of Kenyans continue to set up side hustles while cutting back on non-essential expenses to cope with the high cost of living amongst other economic challenges, a new survey revealed on Monday, January 22.

The survey dubbed “voice of the people poll” authored by research company, Infortrak shows that respondents also identified additional employment or income sources as a strategy to realise unmet needs.

“Getting a side hustle and reducing non-essential expenditure are the main strategies adopted by Kenyans to cope with the economic hardships,” said the report.

A huge chunk of those who used the side hustles strategy were males at 47 per cent and females (42 per cent). It also noted that other respondents take out loans (18 per cent), utilise community resources (16 per cent), borrow money from friends or family (15 per cent), seek financial counselling and assistance (8 per cent), credit cards (4 per cent), ration (3 per cent) and reduce the number of meal per day (1 per cent) to cope with the current tough times.

Additionally, 41 per cent of the respondents use the method to survive.

The interview, which took place between December 18 and 19, 2023 with a sample size of 1,500, was conducted through Computer Assisted Telephone Interviews and has a ±2.53 per cent margin of error and a response rate of 94 per cent.
