Airtel, launched its Free Internet for Schools Programme late last month in Kisii County by connecting 20 schools to the internet for free. Speaking at Kenyoro Mixed Secondary School where he launched the programme, Education Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i said that the ongoing exercise by Airtel to connect more schools to the Internet for free is a huge boost to the education sector in Kenya that will go a long way in helping students do better in school and prepare them for lifelong success.

“It is encouraging to see Airtel take this initiative with the objective of enhancing the quality of learning through the provision of free internet connectivity to Schools. This is an opportunity for our students to be able to access the relevant educational information available online; which will enable them to grow with knowledge needed for the future,” said Dr. Matiang’i. Additionally, Kenyoro Secondary School received new computers fully installed with requisite software donated by Computer for Schools Kenya (CFSK).

In a statement, Airtel Kenya CEO Adil El Youssefi said, “The Internet is becoming more and more important for those in pursuit of knowledge and success in life. This is why Airtel is dedicated to enable more students across Kenya have easy and reliable access to high speed internet free of charge that guarantees them limitless new educational opportunities”.

Adil further added that the company remains committed to support the Government’s Digital Learning Program by providing free Internet connectivity for the trial period of the project, which starts with 150 schools.

The 20 schools connected in Kisii County join another 197 institutions and 250,000 students in 32 Counties across Kenya as beneficiaries of the Airtel FREE Internet for Schools Program. The program is intended to reach 1million students in all Counties across the country by the end of 2016.
