The Maasai Mara National Reserve has been officially recognised by the World Book of Records UK as the site of the World’s Greatest Annual Terrestrial Wildlife Migration.
In a letter to Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu, World Book of Records President Santosh Shukla said the recognition honours the Maasai Mara for hosting the annual Great Migration.
“We are delighted to inform you that the Maasai Mara National Reserve has been officially included in the World Book of Records under the distinguished title: World’s Greatest Annual Terrestrial Wildlife Migration, for hosting the largest and most dramatic annual land animal migration on Earth, involving over 1.5 million wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes traversing the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem,” Shukla wrote.
Established in 1961, the Maasai Mara is renowned globally for the annual migration, which draws thousands of tourists eager to witness the epic wildlife spectacle.
Governor Ntutu welcomed the recognition, calling it a proud moment for Kenya and a reflection of the region’s ongoing conservation efforts.
“This global accolade not only celebrates the awe-inspiring migration but also highlights the unparalleled ecological significance of the Greater Maasai Mara Ecosystem, which harbours over 25% of Kenya’s biodiversity.”
Ntutu said his administration had launched an ambitious campaign to revitalise the reserve upon taking office two and a half years ago.
Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano congratulated the Narok County Government and local communities for safeguarding the integrity of the reserve. She also thanked President William Ruto for his continued support for the tourism sector.
“This is not just a win for Kenya—it is a win for the planet. Karibu Kenya, Karibu Maasai Mara!” Miano declared.
The official World Record certificate will be presented at the Maasai Mara campus after a suitable date and time is confirmed.
