Rosemary Kimwatu Koech has joined Kenya Commercial Bank’s (KCB) family as a new group data protection officer. Previously, she held the position of public policy manager at telecommunication firm, Safaricom.

She has worked at Oxygene, a public relations company, as the head of public policy. She has also served as head of legal and regulatory affairs at WayaWaya, a messaging and payments service company as well as a legal, and administrative officer at Caritas Nairobi.

Additionally, she has been a senior associate legal and regulatory affairs specialist at the Mobile Decisioning Holding Ltd (MODE).

A holder of Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Nairobi and an Advanced Diploma in Public Relations from the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), Ms Koech is part of Lean in Circle Lawyers in Technology (L.I.T). It is also important to note that she mentors young women through the Nairobi Legal Hackers, and through the Kenya ICT Action Network (KICTANet), in which she is a member.

With over 10 years of experience in financial technology (fintech) and being a contributor to the fintech ecosystem, she has played a key role in the establishment and growth of the Nairobi Legal Hackers and the Digital Innovation Group (Caucus).

Ms Koech takes on the role at a time that digital transformation is critical for any organization to prosper. She will be tasked with ensuring that data of an organisation’s subjects such as staff, customers, providers, or any other individuals are processed to comply with the applicable data protection rules.

As all financial institutions in the country shift towards digital transformation, time will tell if she will play her part well to help the bank thrive and reach higher heights.
