Digital application programming interface training and certification across Africa key in helping individuals looking to learn, develop and build tech solutions, the institutions say.

Moringa School, Safaricom and M-PESA Africa have partnered to enable training and certification of individuals looking to learn, develop and build solutions integrated to digital solutions such as M-pesa.

The institutions said on Thursday, February 22, that the initiative seeks to inspire innovation while speeding up the growth of fintech and digital payment provider, M-PESA ecosystem.

It also intends to address the lack of skills within the continent where limited availability of developers has led to a talent war between bigger players, leaving small enterprises unable to access affordable talent.

Acting chief executive officer of Moringa School Ms Fiona Kirua, said that the partnership marks a major leap in the institution’s commitment to equipping developers with the skills necessary to spearhead innovation in the digital realm.

M-PESA managing director for Africa Sitoyo Lopokoiyit on his part said that the partnership with Moringa will help train more developers across the continent.

“These skills are critical with the growing uptake of smartphones and digital financial solutions, and will empower more businesses and especially SMEs to bring their products and solutions to these digital ecosystems such as the M-PESA Super App,” said Lopokoiyit.

The partnership features a bespoke Moringa School curriculum for the M-PESA mini-apps. The M-PESA mini apps enable any business or organization to embed their own app within the M-PESA Super App.

In turn, they can then offer their full suite of products and services complete with integrated payments to more than 60 million M-PESA customers on Safaricom and Vodacom.

Key areas of focus include API development and integration, UI/UX frameworks, and mini-apps development.

Delivered through a blended learning model combining both online and offline elements, the program promises to make high-level tech education accessible to developers across Africa.

This approach is expected to significantly bridge the existing skill gap, placing M-PESA developers at the forefront of technological innovation.

Additionally, the partnership introduces a comprehensive certification program. Developers who successfully complete the training will be awarded a certification, acknowledging their acquired expertise and contributing to their professional development.

This aspect of the program is anticipated to raise the standards and competitiveness of the M-PESA ecosystem.

Both self and group-sponsored learners can apply to join the program on Moringa School’s website starting December 2023.
