TotalEnergies Marketing Kenya and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Centre have launched a partnership for electronic waste management.
Through the partnership, the two institutions will undertake recycling and/or safely disposing of electronic products so that they don’t end up in waste dumps or landfills, polluting the environment. WEEE Centre have placed bins at TotalEnergies service stations which will act as collection centers.
Speaking during the launch, TotalEnergies Marketing Kenya Managing Director Eric Fanchini said the partnership aims at coming up with innovative ideas that are about impact for the consumers and creating awareness on matters relating to the environment as well as Sustainable Development Goals.
“We want to create awareness that we expect will trickle down and become our way of life, that of responsible disposal of waste. It includes a conscious decision to segregate waste and become a part of the solution,” Fanchini said.
President Uhuru Kenyatta recently signed into law the Sustainable Waste Management Act 2021, which contains regulations on waste segregation, conversion of dumpsites into landfills, material recovery facilities, schedules for collection of segregated waste, management of e-waste, extended producer responsibility and sustainable waste management curriculum, among others.
Electronic waste poses a great immediate and potentially irreversible threat to the environment, exacerbated by an unprecedented surge in especially electronic products in the market at a time of rapid technological advancements that are key to driving economic growth.
“Our mandate is to secure a green and safe environment by offering a solution for safe disposal of electrical and electronic waste, secure data destruction and sensitizing the public on safe e-waste management,” WEEE Centre chief executive Bonnie Mbithi said.
The two organizations will utilize the opportunity to educate the public on the environmental and economic benefits of proper electronic waste management and disposal.
WEEE Centre is a social enterprise with a mission of securing a green and safe environment by providing solutions for safe disposal of electrical and electronic waste (e-waste), secure data destruction as well as providing training and raising awareness on safe and circular e-waste management.
