We mostly invest so much time, money and effort in looking beautiful or handsome. However, most of the time people end up using products that are causing more harm than good or tools that accentuate their blemishes. NBM’s CYNTHIA WAIRIMU talked with Winnie Wangari, professional make-up artist and owner of Vasari make-up on how to handle certain circumstances when it comes to make-up.

How do you ensure that there’s no transference of bacteria from one client to another?
Winnie: I sanitize my products by spraying them with alcohol, and as for the tools, I use one tool per person. If that is not possible, I wash or spray alcohol on it before using it on another person. Sanitization after every use is very important in this line of business.

What is the best way to deal with blemishes? Is it advisable to use make-up daily if you have blemishes?
There is no clear-cut way because everyone’s skin is different. What may work on dry skin may not work on someone with sensitive skin. That said, my advice would be to find out first the cause of the blemishes. Ideally,it isn’t advisable to use make daily because the skin needs time to heal. Once in a while is good.

What do you advise a client with acne to do to improve on their skin?
Find the cause of the acne before starting any treatment. It may be from food, hormonal imbalance, weather or reaction from skin
products.

What exactly is color correction and how does it work?
It is a method of using colors that are opposite to each other to cancel out the look of skin discoloration. For example, to cancel out dark under-eye circles, use an orangey/pink corrector.

What does it mean when you say that makeup is oxidizing and what should you do to avoid it?
Oxidizing of makeup is when your foundation turns to orange-like color after a few hours. This is as a result of a chemical reaction when the foundation’s PH shifts in response to change in weather humidity or even the PH of your skin. How to avoid it? There is no way to avoid this, there are just some foundations that oxidize quickly. The only way around it is to get a lighter shade of foundation from yours.

A lot of people have eye bags for one reason or the other, how do you conceal or treat this?
Eye bags are a result of various reasons. For some people, it is genetics and to others it is due to lifestyle; lack of sleep, the food one eats amongst other things. As for concealing with makeup, a color corrector with a good concealer will do the job. I would also recommend a good eye cream that caters to your needs.

What do clients do that slow down your process of creativity?
I have learned to be very patient with my clients since everyone is different. However, one thing that slows the process down is when the client keeps moving or shifting from one position to another.
