Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi (AKUH) has opted to offer free Covid-19 testing for all their in-patients, surgical and day surgery patients as part of the safety measures to provide a safe environment for all patients and staff.

This will enable them determine the best approach to care for their patients including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during their stay in the Hospital and enhance the safety of patients and caregivers.

Since the onset of the pandemic, AKUH Nairobi has remained in consultation with the Ministry of Health, their medical staff and experts in their Infectious Diseases Department to ensure that they have a safe environment of care for patients, visitors and staff and have ensured all services continue uninterrupted both at the Main Hospital in Parklands and Outreach centres.

The hospital has also established a disinfection team, which is specially trained by Infectious Diseases experts to clean and disinfect the Hospital and clinics around the clock.

It has also limited the number of visitors to the wards to one (next of kin) for a maximum of 30 minutes. Should the visitor need to stay longer, an arrangement can be made in consultation with the respective ward nurse manager and increased appropriate channels of communication to manage patient flow through their appointments.

Besides, the hospital has also create a one-way path of travel in and out of the Hospital, established telemedicine for patients who might benefit by reduced person-to-person contact or need just a follow-up augmented by mobile laboratory and pharmacy delivery services.

It has installed plexi glass in the patient registration areas, and issued all the staff with masks, digital thermometers and individualised portable hand sanitisers to ensure their hands are sanitised throughout.
