The Facebook President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, at a meeting with President William Ruto at State House Nairobi on Monday, March 18, said that Kenyan digital content creators will now be able to monetise their content on Facebook and Instagram, as from June, 2024.
This will revolutionise digital creation in the country. However, to be eligible for monetization, a creator must have at least 5,000 followers, be over 18 years old, have at least 5 active videos on their Facebook pages, and have accumulated 60,000 minutes of video views in the past 60 days, including live videos.
“Kenyan content creators who meet the eligibility criteria, will now earn from their Facebook and Instagram spaces as we start monetization by June this year,” Mr Clegg said.
The Head of State, on his part, said the development is a culmination of the government’s year-long campaign that seeks to help creators earn from their online content.
“In a few weeks, many of you will be eligible. Eligibility criteria will now be available for all creators in Kenya. That’s a big step to make sure that our content creators have an opportunity to monetise their talent to give themselves additional revenue and I’m truly grateful to Facebook for walking with us on this journey,” Ruto said.
President Ruto added the partnership was long overdue, saying: “Now content creators can begin earning from their imagination and creativity. I have kept my word to negotiate and get them fresh opportunities.”
“Our partnership between Kenya, Meta and Facebook are geared towards expanding opportunities for the youth. We are progressing our consultations to explore more opportunities for the youth through content creation.
“We are banking on the digital space to create jobs for the millions of jobless youths in our country.”
