Global technology giant Cisco has launched a ‘one-of-a-kind’ cybersecurity centre in Nairobi, aimed at building the skills and knowledge necessary to detect, prevent and respond to cyber threats.

Dubbed The Edge Centre, this Cybersecurity Technology Experience Centre, based at the University of Nairobi, aims to bridge the gap between academic cybersecurity training and industry needs. The facility is poised to increase the number of cybersecurity professionals in Kenya and beyond.

The centre, established in collaboration with the ICT Authority (ICTA) and the University of Nairobi, is part of Cisco’s Country Digital Acceleration (CDA) global programme.

It collaborates with government and private sector leaders to develop sustainable, secure, and inclusive communities using ethical and innovative technology solutions. With more than 1,600 active or completed projects in 50 countries, it generates new value for participating nations, their industries, and residents.

Speaking at the official launch at the Chiromo Campus, ICT and The Digital Economy Principal Secretary John Tanui highlighted the centre’s role, saying it will provide cybersecurity training, develop strategic in-country cybersecurity capabilities, and leverage Cisco Networking Academy for expertise.

“Cisco is launching its first cybersecurity Technology Experience Centre on the African continent. This is designed to serve as a hub for Cybersecurity Training and a showcase of state-of-the-art cybersecurity solutions,” Mr Tanui said.

He noted that the facility will use Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality tools to provide a cybersecurity awareness for government officials and industry professionals throughout Africa.

“The centre will showcase the latest cybersecurity threat intelligence solutions, support government with cybersecurity architecture, use cases, validated designs and knowledge necessary to detect, prevent and respond to cyber threats effectively,” he added.

Last year, the Communications Authority of Kenya reported a surge in cyber-attacks, reflecting a global trend of rising threats. This coincides with a shortage of cybersecurity experts, affecting 86 per cent of organizations worldwide, as revealed by the latest Cisco Cybersecurity Readiness Index.

In response, the Country Digital Acceleration (CDA) program launched in Kenya in 2023. It closely collaborates with Cisco’s Networking Academy, which has operated in Kenya for over two decades, training over 130,000 learners in various digital skills.
