A strike that began from midnight by workers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has caused flight delays and cancellations for both departing and arriving passengers, Kenya Airways (KQ) said on Wednesday, September 11.

This comes as Moss Ndiema, the Secretary General of Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) which represents aviation workers from Kenya Airports Authority, Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, KQ, Swissport Kenya, Tradewinds Aviation Services and Eurocraft Agencies, urges the national government to set aside plans to lease airport operations to Adani Airports Holding of India.

Mr Ndiema is appealing to travelers who had intentions of using JKIA to make alternative plans.

On Tuesday,  September 10, the High Court temporarily issued a stay, thereby blocking the Adani lease proposal to allow for the conclusion of the court case.

A statement from the Judiciary says the matter shall be mentioned on October 8, 2024 with a view to securing a judgement date.

“There’s no value for money in the project,” Ochiel Dudley, the lawyer leading the case, told Organizes Crime and Corruption reporting project. “It exposes the taxpayer to too much risk.”
