The FIA African Rally Championship, Africa’s equivalent of the AFCON in football, is heading for a dramatic Kenyan showdown, with the title fight set to reach its climax in Tanzania.
Kenyans Karan Patel and Aakif Virani will go head-to-head for the ultimate continental crown at the Serengeti Rally of Tanzania, set for October 2-4, 2026 in Morogoro, in what promises to be a nail-biting season finale.
Karan, the two-time African Champion, is on the cusp of history. The KCB Racing driver comes into the final round with a comfortable cushion — he only needs a finish in Morogoro to seal his third career ARC title.
But don’t count out Virani, the newly crowned ARC Masters Champion (over 50 years) of 2026.
For Aakif to snatch his maiden continental title, the script has to be perfect and dramatic: Karan must retire, while Virani must do the maximum — win the rally outright and bag the extra bonus 5 points for winning the Power Stage.
It’s a tall order, but rallying is never over until the final flying finish. Morogoro’s tricky, dusty, and technical stages have a reputation for biting back.
Karan (last year’s winner in Morogoro) has mastered consistency this season, playing the percentages when it mattered. Aakif, on the other hand, has shown blistering pace and will throw everything at the Tanzanian stages.
Will it be a calculated coronation for Karan or a sensational last-gasp heist by Aakif?
If Karan wraps up the title in Morogoro, he will become only the fourth driver in ARC history to win three or more titles, joining an elite club that includes Ivory Coast’s Alain Ambrosino (1983, 1986, 1987), Zambia’s record eight-time champion Satwant Singh and fellow Kenyan Manvir Baryan (2017, 2018, 2019).
