Dawn of Fortune by Wanjiru Thuku seems to be the book that will keep you in the grove. The way the author weaves her plot is admirable. There are no winding episodes that often confuse a reader. The story is told in a linear way where one thing leads to another, leaving the reader with anticipation for the next course of action.
Even though the author, who is born and bred in Kenya, tells a story of Ghana and Rwanda, the book sets the pace for creative efforts in Africa. This is perhaps a testament that Africa is one space and all we need to do is to embrace one another creatively, or otherwise.

The author uses communicative diction – you don’t have to think hard to understand what she is saying. She employs dialogue to move the story forward in an entertaining manner. You can easily tell that the characters are ordinary folks you interact with on a daily basis.
There is a way in which the author uses flashback to propel the story. Another point to note is the author’s thematic focus, which is quite clear. From the word go the story is about Amie and her pursuits in life. The author gives a balanced picture of a young woman doing her best, against all odds, to succeed in life. The romantic part of the story comes alive and takes centre stage.
The way the author oscillates from one scenario to another also optimizes the story’s flow and balance, making it one of the rare reads. One big takeaway in this book is the way the author projects the stream of consciousness of the lead character Amie. It just makes the reader imagine the events as if they are happening in real life.
All book lovers who enjoy a good romantic story that leaves them with a sigh of relief at the end should buy the book. Hard copies are available at Nuria Bookshop along Moi Avenue at a price of Sh.1000.
