Huawei technologies, one of the leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, has recently entered the internet market by introducing its own cost effective broadband solution with the aim of providing affordable internet to areas without access to fibre optic.
The new broadband solution, which is referred to as WTTx (Wireless to the X) is based on the 4.5G wireless broadband technology that allows speeds of up to one gigabyte per second (1GB/s). This will not only improve spectrum efficiency but it will also enable the user to have an experience similar to one experienced when using fibre.
Adam Lane, Senior Director of Public Affairs at Huawei Kenya said, “Internet penetration remains a major challenge in Kenya and in Africa as a whole, and it is for this reason that Huawei Technologies has worked to provide an affordable solution that provides the same user experience as fibre.”
Other than being affordable, the WTTx broadband solution is expected to be fast as instead of using the fibre cables it will leverage on the already existing 4G base stations set up. This will be advantageous not only to consumers but the business sector as it reduces network deployment time and costs.
“WTTx enables operators to roll-out high-speed home and business broadband quickly, whilst reducing infrastructure costs which increases their return on investment and ensures a great service for consumers,” Mr. Lane said.
The WTTx solution broadband provides a high gain plug and play wireless household gateway that will be used to provide users with services such as video broadcasts, voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) as well as VR movies and gaming.
The broadband solution comes at a crucial time when Kenyans are increasing their demand for the internet in their residential buildings as most people opt to work online at home while others also turn to on demand services such as Showmax, Netflix and Iflix for entertainment.
