After launching a new Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) system at the start of 2024, the Cabinet, has put forth recommendations aimed at improving it.
During the first Cabinet meeting of 2025 at State Lodge, Kakamega, the proposal to exempt eTA requirements for all African nations, with Somalia and Libya being the exceptions due to ongoing security risks, was approved, supporting open skies policies and stimulating tourism growth.
Under the proposed changes, most travelers from Africa will also be allowed a stay of up to two months, while nationals from East African Community (EAC) countries will enjoy a six-month stay, in line with existing EAC free movement protocols.
Not only will this initiative simplify the travel process but it is set to encourage tourism, allowing for greater cultural exchange and economic interaction among African nations.
To enhance the efficiency of the eTA system, an expedited processing option is to be introduced, allowing travelers to receive their approvals almost instantly, with a maximum processing time of 72 hours, depending on operational capacity.
This quick approval process aims to reduce the hassles of travel documentation, making it easier for both tourists and business travelers to plan their journeys.
Additionally, an Advanced Passenger Information/Passenger Name Record (API/PNR) system will be implemented to enhance security at entry points, improve pre-screening processes, ensure travelers are thoroughly vetted as well as make passenger processing smoother.
The Cabinet Secretaries of National Treasury, Transport, Interior, and Tourism have been given the task of reviewing and reporting on these proposed guidelines to improve the travel experience.
This united effort showcases Kenya’s commitment to improving travel efficiency and ensuring the country remains an inviting destination for visitors from all over the continent and beyond.
As these initiatives are implemented, they are set to transform the travel landscape in Africa, making it not only more accessible but also truly enjoyable for all.
