The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has renewed its call for a 60 per cent salary increase for teachers in the proposed 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), urging the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to fast-track the signing of the deal.
The union is now appealing to the newly appointed Acting Chief Executive Officer of the TSC, Evaleen Mitei, to prioritise the conclusion of the negotiations. Her predecessor, Dr Nancy Macharia, left office before finalising the discussions, which began earlier this year and were expected to be concluded by 1 July.
Knut Deputy Secretary-General Hezbon Otieno, alongside First National Vice-Chairman Malel Langat, said that teachers across the country are eagerly awaiting the new CBA, as the current 2021–2025 agreement is set to expire on 30 June.
“We are calling on Ms Mitei, who is a level-headed officer, as she settles into office, to fast-track the signing of the CBA for teachers. The negotiation and signing of this document, as per labour laws, is the most important issue teachers are currently following,” said Mr Otieno.
According to Mr Otieno, Knut has already submitted its proposal to the commission, with both parties having resolved technical issues. Only the formal signing remains.
“In the 2025–2029 CBA, Knut has proposed a 60 per cent salary increase to reflect the rising cost of living, which has financially strained workers. The union has also proposed a 30 per cent increase in allowances paid to teachers by the TSC and an enhancement of the medical cover for teachers across the country,” he added.
Mr Otieno made the remarks during the Annual General Meeting of the Bureti Knut branch in Kericho County. He expressed confidence that the agreement would be concluded soon.
