Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) has appointed Eng. Ronoh Kibet Charles as its next managing director and chief executive officer. He will take over from Eng. Peter Waweru Njenga, who is retiring.
The company’s board announced the appointment on Saturday, October 24, 2026, and said Kibet will assume office on February 1, 2027, after a transition period to ensure a smooth handover. The board said he was selected through a competitive recruitment process.
Kibet is a company insider. He currently serves as KenGen’s general manager for commercial services, where he oversees energy markets, investments, new business and partnerships, marketing and corporate communications, and sustainability. He has more than 17 years of experience in geothermal development, project delivery, commercial strategy and business growth.
The board credited him with helping drive the company’s renewable energy development, expand its international consultancy services and advance the Olkaria Green Energy Park, a flagship project aimed at attracting industries that use clean geothermal power.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in Telecommunication and Information Engineering and a master’s degree in Project Management, both from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
He has also completed the Organisational Leadership programme at Harvard Business School and executive education courses at IESE Business School in Spain, the University of Cape Town and Strathmore Business School. He is a certified Project Management Professional and an SAP Project System Consultant.
Kibet takes over a company in a strong financial position. Under Njenga, who was appointed in August 2023 after serving as general manager for infrastructure development at Kenya Power, KenGen posted a profit after tax of Sh10.48 billion for the 2025 financial year.
It also expanded its geothermal consultancy work beyond Kenya, including assignments in Eswatini. Njenga succeeded Abraham Serem, who had led the company in an acting capacity.
KenGen is Kenya’s largest electricity producer. It generates the bulk of the country’s power from geothermal, hydro, wind and thermal sources and is listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange.
