Kenya’s tourism sector has recorded robust growth in revenue during the first half of 2024, making the country a strong appeal as a premier travel destination. According to the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), Kenya earned a staggering Sh142.91 billion ($1.11 billion) in tourism revenue compared to the Sh136.48 billion ($1.06 billion) generated during the same period in the previous year.
There has been a significant growth in visitor numbers to Kenya, with data from KTB, showing that the country welcomed 1.03 million international visitors in the first half of 2024, marking a substantial 21.3 per cent rise compared to the 847,810 visitors received during the equivalent period in 2023.
This increase can be accredited to the country’s diverse offerings, including its breathtaking wildlife, stunning landscapes, and vibrant cultural heritage, all of which continue to allure travelers from around the globe.
On the other hand, the domestic tourism sector has experienced a notable growth, further bolstering the overall tourism landscape. The KTB said a rise in domestic travel saw 2.25 million bed nights recorded during the first half of 2024, reflecting a commendable 10 per cent increase from the 2.06 million bed nights registered in the preceding year, marking a growing trend of Kenyan residents choosing to explore and appreciate the beauty and attractions within their own country.
According to June Chepkemei, the Chief Executive Officer of KTB, the expanding tourism sector is due to the collaborative efforts in promoting sustainable tourism and enhancing the visitor experience.
“The upcoming launch of the second phase of the Tembea Kenya campaign is set to further entice domestic travelers to explore the diverse destinations and experiences that Kenya has to offer,” Ms Chepkemei said.
