Milestone: Wachira Waruru

Royal Media services managing director, Wachira Waruru has been elected the new chairman of the Media Owners Association (MOA), taking over from Dr Hanningtone Gaya of Media 7 Magazine. Dr Gaya had served from 2015.

Mr Waruru who has been at the Royal Media services since 2005 has the expertise, knowledge and experience in the media sector to lead the association on the right path. Prior to joining the Royal Media services, he held the position of managing editor at the Kenya Film Commission and before that he also held a similar position at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation for 3years.

In addition, he is the current chairman of the organizing committee for the Presidential Debate and a former chairman of the Media Council of Kenya. Amassing a vast experience in his years in the sector, Waruru will bring on board much needed expertise to MOA, an association responsible for bringing together media owners and senior industry executives.

The Members of the Executive Committee for the Association include Stephen Gitagama (Nation Media Group), Cyrus Kamau (Capital FM), Dr. Hanningtone Gaya (Media 7), Rose Kimotho (Three Stones), Joshua Chepkwony (Kass Media), Patrick Quarcoo (Radio Africa), Steve Isaboke (Multichoice), Leo Slingerland (Family Media), Paul Jilani (Kenya Broadcasting), Nadir Kilic (Ebru Africa) and Kiprono Kittony (Radio Africa).

Recently, the media industry has been facing many challenges such as huge debts owed by suppliers, significant skill challenges, digital disruptions and the growing problems between the media and the state. Mr. Waruru has the right qualifications to tackle these challenges head on however, whether he will weather the storm or not, only time can tell.
